Alive Again!
Spring has sprung here in North Carolina, and outdoor entertaining will begin. From working in my yard all weekend, it became apparent I need to do some sprucing up to our outdoor spaces. One thing I’m focused on creating is a patio that will adjoin my deck. Based on the topography of my yard and with plans to make it larger in the future, we have decided to do a concrete patio. The only concerns with a concrete design were color and the modern style it would create, which wouldn’t really fit my home.
BUT, the beauty of using concrete now is the versatility to make concrete look like anything you want. Some techniques are even easy to do yourself if you pick the right one. A little DIY never hurt anyone!
Concrete stamping is a technique that some use. This can get expensive and for this design, it’s best to use a professional. Basically, you pick a pattern/design to be placed into the concrete to give it a customized unique look. When done correctly, it looks great! But as mentioned, if you are doing it yourself, make sure you have the right tools and follow all instructions. There are many video tutorials on YouTube.
A second, more cost effective technique, is concrete staining. You can actually purchase concrete already colored, but there are limited options. With staining, you can really make it any color you like…they are mixed up like regular paint. Staining can be done in a weekend. The first day to apply the stain, and the second to apply the sealer. The staining technique can be a great feature by creating the look you desire. You can apply the stain evenly for a solid, unified look, OR you can apply it with variation to give it a rustic, marbleized look. Also, if you already have an existing solid concrete patio, you can use a saw to cut grooves into the concrete to give it a block pattern or any other pattern you like (just make sure to keep the saw and surface moist to cut back on dust). A gallon of stain can typically cover 200-400 sq ft, making the project affordable! Stains are a great way to make the concrete cohesive to your outdoor space and home’s design.
Enjoy your yard, make it alive again!
